"Why won't they do something about this?" Tessimon asked her gnomish companion, not really expecting an answer.

And Firre obliged, continuing to secure straps and clamps, moving dials and throwing levers -- but never deigning to answer the cleric's rants.

"It was good that we had the Key of Earth from that stinking priest," she continued. "But even after sending our tribute to the Doomdreamers, they still don't respond. Don't they realize the mines are in danger of falling?"

Firre continued ignoring her, busy as he was in his work.

"No matter. If those invaders have indeed taken the Water Temple, so much the better. Perhaps this will be made a mountain of Fire once again."

A few more straps tightened, some pulleys and screws put in place, Firre extended his fingers as he mentally counted the necessary steps. His eyebrows lifted as he remembered something crucial, and he walked over and flipped a single red switch, then nodded to himself in affirmation.

"If only the Triad would recognize me as the true Champion, and stop their time consuming searching. The dig has nearly uncovered the entrance to the Node. It is only a matter of time before the glory of Imix is but a thought away! And I have just the gift for him, one sure to please him as he destroys it. I still wonder how a group competent enough to defeat the Temples of Air, Earth, and Water would fall to that crazed druid."

She looked down at the humanoid form lying upon Firre's contraption. A disturbing and evil smile was visible on the gnome's face as he grasped a nearby crank, and began to turn. The screams from the human captive lasted at least fifteen minutes.

"Well done, Firre. I think that was a new record."
